What to Bring to a Tennis Tournament: Pack for Match Day
Prepare for a tennis tournament with a court-ready checklist, event details to confirm, and a plan for the time between matches.

For a tennis tournament, pack your racket, a backup if you have one, a filled water bottle, a towel, spare clothes and socks, and something to eat between matches. Add what the weather calls for. Before you zip up, check the event’s arrival instructions, schedule and ball arrangements: those details shape the rest of your day.
We designed the NST Tennis Tote with separate front and rear racket pockets, so your playing racket and a spare each have a place outside the main compartment. Shoes go underneath, while smaller pockets keep the things you need at check-in and courtside within reach. Here is how to prepare for the match and the time around it.
Check the event before you pack
Save the event details on your phone the night before. You want the venue address, organizer’s contact, current schedule and any registration or membership information the event asks you to show. If matches use more than one site, check which address applies to yours.
Confirm these arrangements with the organizer or, for a team event, your captain:
- Arrival and check-in: Where do you report, and when must you be ready to play?
- Match format and schedule: What format are you playing, and could you have another match that day?
- Warm-up and balls: Are warm-up courts available, and do you need your own practice or match balls?
- Facilities: Can you refill water, buy food, change clothes or wait under cover?
- Updates: Where will schedule or weather changes be posted?
Follow your event’s instructions when planning the journey. For example, the USTA League National Championships FAQ asks players to be ready on site 30 minutes before their scheduled match and notes that schedules can change. It also asks players to bring their own water vessel. Use the instructions for the event you have entered to decide your arrival time and supplies.
Pack for play and the time between matches
Start with the equipment you play with, then add what you will use while waiting. The USTA Oklahoma tennis-bag guide includes spare equipment, drinks, snacks and a change of clothes among its tournament suggestions.
For the court
- Your racket and an available spare. If you already have a second racket ready to play, bring it in case a string breaks.
- Court shoes and socks. Wear or pack the pair appropriate for the surface and venue.
- A filled water bottle and small towel. Put both where you can find them before stepping onto court.
- Small equipment spares you use. An overgrip or spare shoelaces can have a regular pocket instead of sitting loose among clothing.
- Balls, if your event requires them. Keep practice balls separate from any match balls you have been asked to bring.
For the gaps in the day
- A fresh shirt and socks. Choose what you would like to change into between matches or before heading home.
- Food for your expected time at the venue. Bring something familiar to eat; plan for a longer stay if more than one match is possible.
- Weather items. Add a hat and sunscreen for outdoor play, or a layer for a cooler start or wait.
- Phone, keys and event information. Keep the details you saved easy to retrieve at the desk.
- A separate pouch for used clothing. Give damp items their own place after you change.
Lay these out before packing. Check the organizer’s facilities information before relying on a café, refill station or changing room being available. Our tennis tote, backpack, and racket-bag comparison can help if you are still deciding how to carry your match-day gear.
Give each part of the day a place in your tote
Keep your first racket in one of the NST Tennis Tote’s external racket pockets and a spare in the other. Each pocket holds one full-size racket, so you can reach either without opening the main compartment.

Use a smaller pocket for the items you will reach for at check-in, such as your phone and keys. Give your overgrip and other small spares another pocket. Before packing the rest, choose a place for the towel you will take onto court.
Put clothes for later in the main compartment and use the separate lower compartment for the shoes you are carrying. Its own zipper lets you change footwear while the main compartment stays closed. Our shoe-compartment guide shows that layout in more detail.

The tote has 35L of total capacity. Compare the dimensions in our FAQ with your belongings as you choose what to take. Once packed, lift the bag and check that the items you need first are easy to reach. Leave room to return them to the same places during the day.
Reset before your next match
After playing, report the result as your event requires and confirm the time and location of your next match before leaving the venue. The USTA Colorado tournament-day guide also recommends checking your next match details and, before leaving between matches, checking with the tournament director or making sure you know exactly when to be back.
Refill your bottle where available, change into fresh clothes or socks if needed, and put used clothing in its separate pouch. Return your racket, towel and small spares to their usual places before the next court call.
If you are preparing for a lesson instead of an event, our first tennis lesson checklist covers what to ask your coach. For match days, explore the NST Tennis Tote and give your playing gear and between-match essentials places of their own.
