What to Bring to Your First Tennis Lesson: A Simple Bag Checklist
A first tennis lesson checklist: what to ask your coach, what to bring to court, and how to pack for work or plans afterward with the NST Tennis Tote.

For your first tennis lesson, bring water, comfortable clothes you can move in, the shoes your venue requires, and a racket if you have one. Check with your coach about borrowing a racket and whether balls are provided before you buy either. Then add what you need for the plans on either side of the lesson.
We designed the NST Tennis Tote for days with court time and everyday plans: a racket has its own outside pocket, shoes go underneath, and work or personal belongings have separate places inside. Start with the lesson essentials, then pack for your day.
Your first-lesson checklist
Ask your coach before you leave
- Racket: Can you borrow one for the lesson, or should you bring your own? The USTA Southern California beginner guide also suggests borrowing or renting a racket while you get started.
- Balls: Does the coach provide them? For example, Tennis Sarasota provides balls for its lessons. Confirm the arrangement with your own instructor.
- Shoes: What footwear does this court require? Ask about the surface and any sole requirements before choosing your shoes.
- Arrival: Confirm the court address, meeting point and when to arrive. For an outdoor lesson, check how the coach communicates weather changes.
Bring for the lesson
- A filled water bottle. Put it somewhere you can reach during a break.
- Comfortable athletic clothing and socks. Choose clothes that let you move freely and suit the forecast; add a layer for a cooler start or finish.
- The shoes your venue requires. If you are arriving in work or everyday shoes, pack your court pair separately.
- Your racket, if you are bringing one. A borrowed racket can cover that first session once you have arranged it with the coach.
- A small towel. Keep it easy to reach during the lesson.
- Outdoor items, if needed. Pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for time outside.
Add for your plans after class
- Fresh clothes or socks if you are changing before work, errands or meeting someone.
- A separate bag for used clothing so you can keep it apart from the clean items you still need.
- Your laptop and charger if work is part of the day.
- Phone, keys and wallet, plus any personal items you normally carry.
Keep these additions tied to your actual schedule. A lesson followed by a trip home needs a different packing list from one squeezed between work and dinner.
Give the rest of your day a place in the bag
Once you know what the lesson provides, organize the things you are taking by when you will use them. If you are still choosing how to carry it all, our tennis tote and backpack comparison walks through the bag styles.
On the NST Tennis Tote, the front and rear pockets each hold one full-size racket. For a lesson with one racket, use one pocket; the second position is there for a day when you choose to bring another.
If you change shoes at the court, use the lower compartment for the pair you are carrying. Its separate zipper lets you reach your shoes without opening the main compartment. Our shoe-compartment guide shows the layout in more detail.

For a workday, the padded laptop compartment gives your computer a dedicated place. Use the main compartment for the clothes and personal items you have chosen, and the smaller pockets for keys and other small belongings. The exterior bottle pocket keeps water accessible when you stop to drink.
Check the bag dimensions in our FAQ against your own belongings as you decide what to take. You can see the compartments and product details on the NST Tennis Tote page.
Unpack when you get home
Take out your used shoes, towel and clothing after the lesson. Empty the bottle and set aside anything that needs washing before you repack.
If the tote needs cleaning, empty every pocket, then spot-clean it by hand with mild detergent and lukewarm water. Open all compartments and let it air-dry in a shaded, ventilated place. Store it only when fully dry; our care instructions cover the full routine.
Before your next lesson, put back the clean items you used and refill your water bottle. Keep the coach’s contact details and court location on your phone so they are easy to find when it is time to head out. If you are preparing for an event later, our tennis tournament packing list covers check-in and the time between matches.
